Governor will try to clear the Maha mess
The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party haggled some more, the Sena and the BJP shut each other out and Governor P C Alexander moved in to try and clear the mess as eight days after the election results there was still no sight of a government in Maharashtra.

Moves are afoot to persuade senior party leader Ramakrishna Hegde to take over presidentship of the Janata Dal (United) in an attempt to defuse the crisis arising out of Hegde's exclusion from the Vajpayee Ministry.

Sonia orders party elections
Faced with mounting pressure to revamp the party in the wake of its worst-ever electoral debacle, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has ordered the holding of the party's organisational elections at the earliest.
