CHANDIGARH, NOV 15: ``There is lot of talent at the university level but it is not being tapped in the right way. The promising players usually don't get proper exposure that is why most of the medal prospects are not able to deliver the goods at the right time which deprive the nation of medal hope at the international level,''said Kapoor Singh, who was here as an observer during the All India Inter-University wrestling championship which concluded recently at the Panjab University Indoor Hall.Kapoor, who is the Director Sports, Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, said that there is immense potential at the university level in certain disciplines including wrestling but the players are not being handled properly which accounts for lackluster affairs of the Indian contingent at the various international competitions. He also held the Wrestling Federation of India respensible for debacle at the international level.
But the director sports was of the opinion that if the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is given more financial assistance and responsibility to groom the medal winners, the results would be outstanding. He also informed that the overall standard of wrestling at the All-India level has gone up.
``Most of the contests held in this edition compared to last year were nail-bitting. It was difficult to predict till the last moment which university would top the medal tally,'' disclosed Kapoor, who is associated with wrestling for the last decade.
After the competition, Kapoor Singh was a proud man as his university lifted the title with 14 points edging out Kurukshetra University, by four points, who were also strong contenders for the trophy. Kapoor attributes the team's success to incentives given by the university (MDU). ``Wrestling is very popular in the region (North) so there is no dearth of talent. We just have to goad the talented lot in the right direction and also provide facilities to them,'' said the director.
The director sports was also satisfied with the officials for give fair and impartial judgement during the meet. ``There was not a single protest in the meet in this edition.''
Rohtak University has the distinction of winning the title (wrestling) twelve times in the last two decades and on other occasion has been in the race for the title (reached last four). According to the director sports, the university has adequate infrastructure for the game (two wrestling mats) which gives them winning edge over the others, and certain plans are in the pipeline to improve it further. ``We will get Rs 50,000 as cash incentive for winning the title here from AIU which will be spent on equipment,'' said the director.
The AIU has identified certain disciplines which include athletics, boxing and wrestling, and gives cash incentives to the university which wins the title.
The director sports was, however, strongly against women's taking to wrestling which has been a male dominating sport. ``It is all gimmick of bureaucracy and federation. There are other avenues where females can show their prowess.''
