LUCKNOW, NOV 18: Even as a controversy rages over the appointment of corporator Kusum Rai as chairperson of the State Women's Rights Commission, she is taking her job seriously.Six days after a 45-year-old woman allegedly committed sati in Satpura village in Mahoba district, Kusum visited the place today to ``collect facts'' required for her new assignment as watchdog of crime against women in the state.
She talked to relatives of the woman, visited the site of the ``sati'' and is likely to remain there for another day. But, unlike her previous visits during the regime of Kalyan Singh, Kusum was not accorded a welcome by police and administrative officials there.
Her earlier tours to any district used to put the bureaucracy on its toes as the message to officials was clear ``any displeasure for madam is bound to earn the ire of the chief minister''. The officials used to literally line up to meet her on her previous tours.
