Govt may amend Christian law
Express News service
New Delhi, Dec 2: The government is contemplating changes in the Christian personal law to do away with provisions which are discriminatory to women, Union Minister for Law Ram Jethmalani said in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.Jethmalani said the fresh legislation was ready and the government would introduce it soon. He was replying to an appeal made by Eduardo Faleiro of the Congress during the passage of Marriage Laws Amendment Bill, 1999, which seeks to amend the Hindu marriage and divorce laws in favour of women. The law seeks to invalidate epilepsy as a ground for divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriages Act.Faleiro asked Jethmalani to overhaul the Christian personal laws relating to marriage and divorce as these were outdated and treated women with bias.He asked the government to ``humanise and modernise '' Christian laws, which had British moorings. ``We are Indians and our laws should essentially relate to the ethos and traditions of our culture and land,'' Faleiro said.TheCongress MP said the existing laws were discriminatory to Christian women. Under the existing law, while the husband can divorce his wife on grounds of adultery, the wife is not entitled to do the same, he has said. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
