RAJKOT, Dec 2: Rajkot Municipal Corporation's much-touted pipeline has failed to live up to expectations. RMC engineers haven't yet succeeded in bringing the targeted water of 88 lakh gallons through the pipeline as it has got punctured every time the corporation increased the flow of water.
The civic body is presently able to bring 50 lakh gallons of water through the pipeline daily. But what is worrying everyone is the situation two months later when the water in Bhadar dam dries up. Then the city will be almost completely dependent on water from underground borewells in Wankaner which is transported through the pipeline.
Technical assistant to the commissioner Vijay Anadkat said they were trying to rectify the problem of punctures. City engineer H A Thakarar said they expected to solve the problem by next week.
The two major dams which provide water to Rajkot, Aji 1 and Nyari 1, have already dried up. The water in Bhadar dam is expected to dry up in the next two months.
The RMC lifts 35 lakh gallons of water everyday from underground water sources. Another 60 lakh gallons of water is taken from the Bhadar dam. The remaining 25 lakh gallons is taken from other sources like Aji 3 and borewells in and around the city. The total daily requirement of Rajkot is around 120 lakh gallons.
The corporation yesterday decided to supply water through tankers in the newly merged area of RMC every two days. About 225 tankers supply water to Raiya, Nana Mava and Mavadi areas on every alternative day.
Meanwhile, the corporation has also planned to store the water of Wankaner in Aji dam. Mayor Manjulaben Patel said they were planning to store the water in Aji 1 dam as a safety measure so that if anything goes wrong with the Wankaner pipeline then the water from this reserved stock could be used.
