VADODARA, Dec 2: Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria plans to economise the Vadodara Municipal Corporation's (VMC) expenses.
Back after attending a workshop at Beijing, Aloria told reporters that he plans to increase the non-tax revenue by selling VMC land and assets. The civic chief said planning for resources for VMC was important as there are hardly any big industry located within city limits.
Inspired by the manner in which bureaucracy has been downsized by 40 per cent in China, Aloria plans to cut non-developmental expenses. Wasteful expenses would be cut drastically, he reiterated.
Providing maximum quantum of civic amenities to citizens was the VMC's top priority, Aloria said, adding that the civic body had reached half-way mark so far.
Forty-one delegates from the US, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Nepal and China attended the workshop organised by local self-government body Logotry and the Publication and Training department of China. Aloria was one of the two Indian representatives and participated in the workshop through the All-India Institute of Local Self-Government.
The participants observed that decentralisation had increased pressures on the local self-government bodies. It was also observed that to make the local self-government bodies provide better amenities, they should be provided with adequate infrastructure facilities.
