VADODARA, Dec 2: The District Consumer Forum on Thursday ordered a four-month civil imprisonment for the owner of a Vadodara-based travel agency for not following its earlier verdict. The forum has ordered the city police to issue warrants against the owner and arrest him by December 9.
The judgment was delivered by Forum president A S Sayeed and member Ashok Mehta following a complaint filed by Jairamchandani. The complainant stated that he had booked for a tour package from Bhavna Travels in early 1997 for Rs 3800. After returning from the tour, Jairmachandani had approached the management of the agency lamenting that he was not provided with the facilities which were supposed to be encapsulated in the tour package.
Despite the complainants' plea, the management of Bhavna travels had allegedly refused to repay the booking amount. In September 1997, Jairamchandani approached the consumer court seeking justice. The forum ordered the travel agency to return Rs 3800. However, despite many reminders the agency refused to comply with the orders.
The complainant again approached the forum and on Thursday, the latter ordered a imprisonment for the owner of the agency along with a fine of Rs 2000. The court also ruled that in case the respondents failed to deposit the compensation amount, he would have to undergo a further imprisonment of 15 days. The forum also directed the city police to issue warrants against the agency owner and arrest him before December 9.
Meanwhile, in another case the forum also penalised a courier company for misplacing a consignment. In his petition, Arvind Patel had stated that he had booked a saree worth Rs 9000 to be despatched to his relative in Mumbai. However, the consignment got lost in the transit. The forum directed the courier company to pay Rs 9000 along with 18 per cent interest to the complainant as compensation.
