SURAT, Dec 2: The State government is thinking seriously of introducing `Consumer Safety' as a part of the school curriculum in order to create an awareness about consumer rights and ensuring the safety of citizens, said Liladhar Vaghela, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs while inaugurating a day-long exhibition and seminar on consumer awareness.Organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Consumer Affairs and Protection Agency, Ahmedabad, the event was held at Samruddhi on Thursday.
Among others who spoke at the seminar included state Food and Consumer Affairs director R M Joshi, Weights and Measures department director D A Satya and others.
Earlier in his welcome speech, SGCCI president Amarnath Dora stated that although consumer awareness and related issues were soon gaining prominence, the consumer protection forum here in Surat had no head. In addition, the consumer court was housed in a small building with inadequate facilities.
The exhibition, where a number of fraudulent methods being used by traders while weighing, were demonstrated. People were advised to check the weighing scales and other things while buying items. The exhibition aimed at creating awareness was the fifth of its kind, an official release issued here said.
