DECEMBER 2: Century Rayon defeated Mumbai Port Trust 1-0 to bag the DHL Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in the Goan Sports Association Veterans football tournament, played at the Cross Maidan, today.
Earlier in the Goan SA-conducted Inter-Collegiate tourney, St Andrew's (Bandra) trounced Garcia (Vasai) 5-2 to emerge champions.
MbPT's lukewarm challenge came towards the end of the game, when they threw everything into attack in a desperate search for the equaliser. They came by a good chance but Roy Fernandes' attempt from close was confidently parried away by Century goalkeeper Shekhar Bangera, also an ex-Orkay player.
The Collegiate final encounter was a thrilling affair and dished out some good goals. St Andrew's, coached by former India player Timothy Pereira of Tatas, gave a good account of themselves and built a sizeable 3-0 lead in the first-half itself.
Garcia looked like making a fight of it when they reduced the margin (1-3) early in the second-half. But Andrew's put the issue beyond doubtwhen they struck again and made it 4-1 in the 46th minute.
Shaun D'Souza (2), Arveen Thakur (2) and Dennis Menezes were the goal-getters for Andrew's. Roshan Dias and Ignatius Coelho reduced the margin for Garcia.
