`Let's do it, Greene tells Johnson'

REUTERS
North Carolina, December 2: World 100-metre record holder Maurice Greene has laid down the challenge for a pre-Olympic 200-metre race against Michael Johnson, the double-world record holder he hopes to beat at next year's Sydney Games.

``Let's do it. Let's show everybody what they want to see,'' Greene said yesterday from Los Angeles when asked if he would like to race Johnson ahead of next year's Olympic trials.

With both going for the 200-metre gold at Sydney, any clash between the world record holders would be a highlight of the pre-Olympic season.

Greene said he ``hopes'' a race with Johnson can be arranged -- either in a high-profile meet or made-for-TV event. But he isn't counting on it.

``Johnson ... It's like we're playing cards,'' Greene said. ``I'm ready to play mine, but he's not going to play his hand until he feels like he's ready. He's holding all the cards in his hand. Whenever he gets ready, he knows where I am and how to contact me.''

Renaldo Nehemiah, director of Worldwide Trackand Field for Gold Medal Management, which represents Johnson, said, ``If they happen to meet at the same venue, obviously they will race each other. But it is not in Michael's plans to strategically have to run against Maurice Greene.''
