EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

HYDERABAD, DECEMBER 5: `DD-Gnanadarshan', an exclusive 16-hours-a-day national educational television channel of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), would become operational, initially through test transmission mode, by the end of this month.

IGNOU Vice-Chancellor and Distance Education Council chairman Prof A W Khan told reporters here on Saturday that the channel would function as a national co-operative venture with IGNOU playing the role of a nodal agency. All the open universities, distance education institutions and other allied agencies in various States would participate in it. He said the IGNOU had established its own earth station and had a tie-up with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the purpose.

`Gnanavani', another educational programme, would be broadcast over All India Radio soon on similar lines, he announced. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has proposed to give licence to the university to run FM radio stations in collaboration with thestate open universities.Referring to the two-day all-India open universities vice-chancellors' conference which began at Dr B R Ambedkar Open University on Saturday, Khan said the meeting discussed issues such as sharing of printed material, modification of syllabus, web-centric courses and provision of financial and technical assistance from IGNOU's distance education council to the state open universities.
