Make judges more accountable -- Law Commission chief
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

HYDERABAD, JAN 3: A permanent mechanism is needed to keep a check on the behaviour of judges and fix accountability for the country's judiciary, Chairman of Law Commission of India Justice B P Jeevan Reddy said here on Sunday.

Delivering the key-note address at a state-level seminar on "Accountability of the Judiciary" organised by the Indian Association of Lawyers here, he said that some judges resorted to irregularities for personal benefit eroding the credibility of the entire system. He felt the impeachment weapon against the erring judges too failed to yield results.

The ultimate test of the judges' accountability depended on their sense of public good and commitment to the profession. Pointing out that the problem of citing another judge's orders as a precedent has become acute, Justice Jeevan Reddy said orders cannot be issued blindly and under pressures.
