Withdraw the UP Religious Places Bill, PM told

LUCKNOW, FEB 2: Mohammed Rabe Nadvi, who took over as the rector of Darul Uloom, Nadvatul Ulema, after the death of renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi, popularly known as Ali Mian, has written a letter to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee to direct the R P Gupta government in the state to withdraw the controversial Religious Places Bill passed by the Assembly in the last session.

Nadvi, in his letter, has said the state government had introduced and passed the Bill without adequate debate. The Opposition parties had walked out of the House and the ruling parties had passed it in haste, he said.He said it was a matter of shame that religious places could not be built even on private land without the permission of the District Magistrate of the respective district. It violated the Fundamental Right of Religion and hurt all religious-minded people, he added. The Bill includes the construction of madarsas.
