Anju smashes National long jump mark

BHOPAL, FEB 23: Anju Marcus of India set a new National record in long jump for women by covering a distance of 6.59 metres at the one-day International Athletic Circuit Meet here on Wednesday.

Anju's effort erased the earlier National record of 6.43 metres set by GG Pramila at Lucknow last year.

Indian athletes dominated the events in the meet although participants from five other nations also took part in it.

In the women's long jump, Soma Biswas cleared a distance of 5.70 metres and was placed second while V Jayalaxmi came third with a distance of 5.00 metres.

Alisvich Vitali of Belarus was placed first in hammer throw with a distance of 67.95 metres while Virendra Punia of India came second with a distance of 61.74. Nirbhay Singh of India was placed third with 60.80 metres.

In the 100-metre sprint for men, Anil Kumar of India came first by clocking 10.56 seconds but he could not maintain his own record of 10.33 seconds created by him last year at Chennai.

In this event, D Bloodstein (Ukraine), with a timing of 10.72 seconds, came second while Gregory Andrei (Russia) was placed third with a timing of 10.84 seconds.
