Memorial gate for Indian world war heroes in London
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

LONDON, MARCH 29: A memorial to recall the contribution of the people of Indian sub-continent, Africa and Caribbean in the first and second world wars in British Army will be built here.

A 1.9 million pound memorial gate will be built at the top of Constitution Hill at Hyde Park corner to commemorate contribution made by people who volunteered to serve in the British Army during the first and second World Wars.

The memorial will take the form of commemorative gates with an adjacent pavillion set on a paved area. The design, by Liam O'Connor of London, was the winning entry in a competition in which five other leading designers participated, it was officially announced Wednesday.

The millennium commission will contribute 9,12,000 pounds for the memorial gates trust.

Baroness Shreela Flather, chairman of the trust said without the 2.8 million volunteers from the Indian sub-continent in World War II, the outcome could have been different, particularly in North Africa and Burma.
