Market cap of ICE companies zooms 208 pc in one year
ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU

MUMBAI, JULY 8: Investors who have put money in the stocks of ICE (infotech, communication and entertainment) companies in the early days of the boom last year are wealthier by several times. The aggregate market capitalisation (the total market value of all listed shares) of 95 selected ICE companies increased by 208.6 per cent to Rs 2,59,522 crore on June 30, 2000, from the level of Rs 84,100 crore on June 30, 1999.

Had it not been the strong correction in the March-April period of 2000 -- following the crash on Nasdaq -- the market cap would have gone up further. Most of the ICE companies had in June regained part of the market cap which they lost in the Nasdaq-led correction.

According to a study conducted by The Financial Express, the market cap of top 10 ICE companies increased from Rs 67,837 crore in June 1999 to Rs 2,12,276 crore in June 2000, recording a positive growth rate of 212.92 per cent. The top 10 in terms of market capitalisation in the descending order as on June 30, 2000 are Wipro (Rs 66,453 crore), Infosys Technologies (Rs 55,037 crore), Zee Telefilms (Rs 18,478 crore), Satyam Computer (Rs 16,772 crore), MTNL (Rs 13,328 crore), VSNL (Rs 11,493 crore), Himachal Futuristic (Rs 10,174 crore), NIIT (Rs 8,543 crore), HDFC Bank (Rs 6,187 crore) and Global Tele-System (Rs 5,811 crore).
