Agitation against beauty pageant

MADURAI, November 22: About 50 participants from 16 associations, led by Venmani, staged a dharna against the Miss World contest, in front of the Periyar Bus stand in Madurai, on November 22. They stated their objections and sought to move public opinion. The dharna was peaceful and did not hinder traffic.

Post-office fraud, lead accused missing

BANGALORE, November 18: The CBI has unearthed a misappropriation of saving funds to the tune of Rs 75 lakh in a post-office at Kengeri, near here. The post master, the main accused in this case, is missing. The CBI also suspects the involvenment of some top postal officials in this racket.

Not enough SC applicants for teacher posts

SALEM, November 19: Of the 888 secondary grade vacancies for teaching possts in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, the District Employee exchange was able to send only 130 SC and ST persons owing to the lack of sufficient number of candidates for the 19% quota. Therefore, the names of SC candidates on the rolls of other district employment exchanges have been arranged to be sent.

LTTE Smuggling racket busted

CHIDAMBARAM, November 22: The `Q' branch police at Madurai and Tiruchirappalli have arrested six LTTE operatives inlcuding a woman, involved in smuggling supplies for LTTE. A powerful HF wireless set and global positioning instrument for boat navigation were seized from them.

TN to take measures against ragging

CHENNAI, November 20: Following the gruesome murder of the Madras University Vice Chancellor's son Navarasu, a first year medical college student, the TN Government has announced strict measures against ragging in colleges. Henceforth, universities and colleges will be empowered to suspend or expel students who indulged in ragging.

Rail-roko delays Rockfort Express

TIRUCHI, November 19: The rail-roko agitation organised by members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Sangh delayed the Chennai-bound Rockfort Express by 30 minutes at Tiruchi on November 19. The protest was against the interrogation of a ticket examiner in connection with a theft of three suitcases from the Pandyan Express on November 17.

Rally for separate statehood for Kodagu

MADIKERI, November 19: The Kodagu Rajya Mukthi Morcha will convene at Madikeri, in Karnataka, on November 22 to seek statehood for the Kodagu district. The State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M C Naniah has opposed this demand but supported the one for parliamentary representation of Kodagu.

Increase in Refugee influx in Ramanathapuram

RAMANATHAPURAM, November 18: There has been a heavy influx of refugees into the Ramanthapuram district in Tamil Nadu, from July 31. So far, the number of refugees stands at 1,898 families comprising 2,545 men, 2,110 women, 713 boys and 736 girls, according to District Collector B Anand.

VELLORE, November 18: Panchayat Union social forestry plot watchers observed a fast in front of the Vellore Collectorate on November 18, demanding regulrised services of temporary plot watchers and the reinstatement of those plot watchers whose services had been terminated earlier for want of funds.

24-hour ambulance service in Chennai

CHENNAI, November 22: MARS (MIOT Accident Rescue System), a service to pick up and rescue accident victims in Chennai, round-the-clock, was launched by the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, on November 23. Dr P V A Mohandas said that the ambulances are equipped with sophisticated gadgetry and even surgery can be performed inside them. MARS can be contacted on telephone numbers 4847802 and 4847803.

Irate bus-commuters disrupt traffic

CHENNAI, November 19: Traffic on the busy arterial Anna Salai was hit when irate PTC commuters squatted on the road protesting against irregular bus-services and the non-stopping of buses at stops during peak hours. The commuters who refused to budge despite assurances by the police to take appropriate action, dispersed only after a threat of arrest. However, no PTC officials came to the spot.

SAIL considers melting facility for Salem Plant

SALEM, November 22: The Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is considering a Rs 600 crore melting facility for the Salem Steel Plant, as part of the proposed backward integration plan. This would raise the total investment in the plant to Rs 1,600 crore and would have scrap as raw material and might use electric arc furnace.

Students Boycott classes

CHENNAI, November 18: Hundreds of students from Quaid-e-Milleth Women's Arts College in Chennai boycotted classes and staged a demonstration on November 18, demanding basic amenities in the hostel. They also protested against the victimisation of students who made allegations regarding corruption in the administration.

Bomb threat in Shastri Bhavan

CHENNAI, November 21: The Office of the Central Board of Film certification at Shastri Bhavan Central Government Office Complex here was subjected to a bomb hoax, causing occupants of the building to leave the premises immediately. Normality was restored only after three hours.

Annamalai University to tighten rules

CHIDAMBARAM, November 22: The Annamalai University has tightened hostel rules, in the aftermath of the gruesome murder of a student on the premises. Some of the measures are limits on expenditure by students, roll-call in hostels, written declaration by students not to rag and denial of hostel accomodation to students poor in academics.

TN Police receive new traffic equipments

CHENNAI, November 19: As part of the TN Urban Dvelopment Programme (TNUDP) funded by the World Bank, the TN CM M Karunanidhi handed over special traffic improvement equipment including vehicles to the State police. The scheme aims to improve traffic in important urban centres in the State.

Women to manage new milk-societies

BANGALORE, November 20: The Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation will set up nearly 2,600 milk societies all over the State, to be managed entirely by women, from January 1, 1997. These milk societies are to get a subsidy of Rs 3 lakh each from the Milk Federation.
