Tidbits about IIT-Delhi


Established as College of Engineering in 1961, IIT-Delhi was given the current name and declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963".

It is located in Hauz Khas region of South Delhi and has an area of 320 acres. A total of 26 departments, centres and schools are present in IIT Delhi.

The institute also has a total of 426 faculties and 3500 students (2200 undergraduate and 1300 postgraduate) studying in it. The campus has a total of 11 hostels.

Each academic year consists of two semesters and a summer term.

The education system is organised around a credit system, which ensures continuous evaluation of a student's performance and provides flexibility to choose courses so as to facilitate progress at an optimum pace suited to one's ability or convenience.

Each course is assigned certain number of credits depending upon the class contact hours.

A minimum number of credits (around 180 for four-year BTech programmes and around 216 for five-year Integrated M Tech programmes) are to be completed in order to qualify for the award of degree.

The 5-year integrated programs are also known as Dual Degree programs, resulting in a BTech and MTech degree.

Tryst: Technical Festival of IIT Delhi It is organised during the first weekend of February.

Rendezvous: Cultural festival of IIT Delhi, organised during the third weekend of September every year.

Sportech: Sports Festival of IIT Delhi, organised in November every year.

Perspective: Youth Awareness Festival of IIT Delhi, organised in March every year.
The Indian Institutes of Technology need no introduction either in India or abroad, for their alumni have already made their presence felt everywhere. The Institutes were set up by the Government of India as 'Institutions of National Importance' and almost all reputed international academic benchmarks have given them high rating.
