Bhopal Union Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday came out in support of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar after Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray slammed him for "I am an Indian first comment".

"Sachin is a good cricketer and people opposing his recent statement are doing so only to gain cheap publicity," Deshmukh told reporters in Bhopal.

"Every one is free to express his views in a democracy", Deshmukh said, adding that Sachin has not committed any wrong.

Without naming Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena, he said that the problem lies with them adding there was no need to give importance to their statements.

"If the media stop giving coverage to acts aimed to draw cheap publicity, such things will stop," he said.

"This was just a media creation," he said to a query.

He denied that Congress government in Maharashtra was soft on people indulging in whipping up regionalism and violence in the state, adding that around 2000 people have been booked in this regard in last few years.

To a poser, Former Maharashtra Chief Minister said that MNS chief too has been booked but he got bail from a court. The Maharashtra government has moved an appeal in this connection, Deshmukh added.

Deshmukh refuted reports that Congress was tactically supporting MNS, saying there was a lot of difference in the ideologies of the two parties.

The Union Minister however said that both Sena and MNS had the same ideology.

He said that Congress' victory in recent Maharashtra assembly polls indicates that people refuse the ideology of Sena and MNS.

Unwarranted discussions by P. S. Kumar on 18 Nov 2009

First of all I would like to call it as unwanted and unwarranted discussion. Sachin has said something which was not required and Siva Sena chief said something against it. Thats all.It was a simple statement sachin and SenA chief made and thats all. But people are just making issues for nothing.Sachin could have abstain from making such statements as end of the day both Sachin and Thackerey are Maharastrians.

Sachin's remark by MPS RAMANI on 18 Nov 2009

If the senas are Taliban, Congress, NCP and BJP in Maharashtra are moderate Taliban. Why should Sachin say he is a proud Maharashtrian. If he said he was a proud Indian will it not include Maharashtra. Nowadays it is hard to locate a liberal, broad-minded Maharashtrian.Only God can save this country being engulfed by linguistic fanaticism. Finally when Mumbai was attacked last year was it the sena or India that saved it? What about the sacrifices of those non-Maharashtrian Indians?

respect cultural space by kp on 18 Nov 2009

India is a sum of its ethnic parts, not subtractions. If India fails to nurture them and give space to them, there won't be any diversity left, nor India. We are Indians because we are Marathi and Gujaratis and Tamils. Please respect their cultural space. It is those who like to de-indianize indian diversity who seek to pit them against each other for their own power. How did congress won - by splintering the vote base of marathis into Shivsena and MNS camps. And now they tout 'Indian first' as insidious negation of being Marathi. If Congress has its way, not only ethnic diversities would be denied any breathing space, India itself would be de-indianized too in favor of global fads.

INDIAN MANOOS by TP SREERAM on 18 Nov 2009

WE - MARATHI MANOOS, GUJARATI MANOOS, TAMIL MANOOS , KERALA MANOOS , PUNJAB MANOOS - ARE ALL INDIAN MANOOS FIRST. WE ALL SUPPORT OUR INDIAN INTERNATIONAL HERO SACHIN TENDULKAR FOR HIS INTELLIGENT REMARK THAT WE ARE ALL INDIANS FIRST.

I am a Manoo too! by MANOOOO on 20 Nov 2009

Stay in the crease of democracy by Prem Nizar Hameed on 18 Nov 2009

We should not nurture regionalism. Otherwise it will devour the concept of vasudheva kumtumbakam. And for the matter of Sachin, it is painful. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is the Czar of Cricket who has always been at the zenith of his career. His magic bat sends the balls to cross many boundaries, but he always stays within the boundary of humility. He still runs between wickets for garnering runs, but stays in the crease of decency. He attributes his humility to his upbringing. For that I salute not only him, but also his beloved parents. I live in his time as a fellow citizen is a great achievement for me. May a world cup final with his outstanding performance witness his glorious retirement! However,Thackeray must learn a simple lesson from this proud Marathi manoos how to stay in the crease of democracy.

cheap publicity by sena and MNS by raghu on 17 Nov 2009

How about sticking to politics Mr Bal Thackeray!! You and your divisive, cheap politics

Another attempt by an old Fascist by Gregory Naik on 17 Nov 2009

What can one say about this old man some people say that as one starts to get older his brains start to fade away and becomes childish, this is an genuine example, the poor fellow (Bal Thackeray) look how he is crying like Sachin Tendulkar had snatched a "Lolly Pop" right out of his hand. I would ask people to forgive this old guy and not to pay attention to him. I see some people calling people of Mumbai ill informed and illiterate as they did not vote for Shiv Sena my friend you need to search within yourself who is more Illiterate and Ill-Informed people who try to Unite the country and its regions or the people who try to divide a country based on it region. This kind of attitue would draw a border among the Indian states and may be we would require visa to got to other states and same would be true for other states. My sense prevail in supporters of MNS and Shiv Sena.

Bal Thakeray is right by Praveen Tatke on 17 Nov 2009

I am an admirer of Sachin the cricketer, but I think this time Sachin made these remarks simply to get political popularity. In this sense what Bal Thakeray said is correct.

Sachin doesn't need anymore popularity by KS on 18 Nov 2009

Sachin doesn't need anymore popularity %u2013 whether it is political or non-political. He is already famous all over the globe. It is Bal Thakeray who is trying to be popular, although he is already very popular in the under-world, where he belongs.

Balasaheb wrong by Raj Patel on 18 Nov 2009

Sena will not going to win any major election and never form GOV.in Maharastra in his life time. He wants to isolate Marathi people from rest of INDIA and that is not going to happened. He is frustrated old angry man deserve to be pardoned. Sachin is a wise guy and knows his limitations unlike Balasaheb, He won't come in politics to malign his reputation.

Nonsence! by Shirish on 18 Nov 2009

Sachin never "made these remarks"!! He was asked a specific question to which he gave the correct answer. What "political popularity" are you talking about?? What is that "correct" thing that Bal Thackeray said?? Each city of India (incl Bombay, yes Bombay) belongs to everybody. Period. Dont try a parallel constitution. If you want to change the present constitution, win the Maharashtra polls with majority & introduce legislation. Can u win Maharashtra?? It is a dream for Shiv Sena..

Ideology? by Hrishikesh Raut on 17 Nov 2009

Congress' ideology is different from all parties, which is none! Congress wants that others opinions not be covered by media so they can continue to win national and state elections by getting votes of illiterate and ill-informed people of Bharat.

Hmm Ideology? by Naik on 17 Nov 2009

I think have no Ideology is better then ahve a Ideology which divides a country on its regions, more of I think that BJP and Shiv Sena are the parties that gain gain vote of Illiterate people by promising them vada pav, or may be then Mumbai is full of illiterates so thats the reason Congress won there, my friend you need to rethink on your statement.

real colour of the dirty politics by mn pasha on 17 Nov 2009

this shows the real colour and attiude of these sivsiniks.they are claiming as more indians than anybody and in true picture they are the real enemies of national integrity.the present bombay is the effort of people from all over india through out all these years and it is not the parental property of some vicious polititans.as bal said these type of politics is not suitable for gentle men like suchin.but what suchin meant is true.we should be more indians than marathi ,gujarathi.madrasi .beehari, bengali or punjabi.be prouud to say as indian

Who is the real Marathi Manoos? by Dirk Lewis on 17 Nov 2009

The battle of the Tiger and the wanna be Tiger - one must fall. Bal has done what every Congress supporter would have wished for - shown his true colours. If even now the Shiv Sena and the MNS win a few seats in the next election, it will be a surprise. Who better than Sachin Tendulkar to tell these two to shut up! If anyone has been watching the news lately it is plain to see the kind of bashing the MNS and Sena get in any debate. They are a shame to Maharashtra and the Marathi people. Trust me they are probably thinking to themselves - rahu de, mhatara jhalet. And for the young Tiger, they are probably ashamed he uses their mother tongue simply for his personal, political and financial gains. I am a Christian, a Mumbaiite, an Indian but a human being first. Thank God there are more of us humans out there and not these Tigers and other animals, or we would have to have cages everywhere.

Bravo by Harkishan on 17 Nov 2009

Bravo!! Bravo

This is ridiculus..!!! by vaibhav on 19 Nov 2009

It's seems that shiv sena likes to do cheap politics to be in the news.they might have forgotton that the person they are trapping belongs to the entire country not just their so called state maharashtra. there are more than a billion people supporting this gentleman than few illiterates and discriminators in their side.
