Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today flagged off a host of trains for Naxal stronghold of Jangalmahal while warning the ultras to shun violence and come to the table for talks.
“I appeal to the Maoists... do not show us arms but talk about peace and work together with us for development. I call upon the people of Jangalmahal to thwart the guns. If bullets are exhausted in their (Maoists’) guns, they are just rats. Nandigram has shown us the way to fight against guns. I urge everyone to follow the example here and stand up against the Maoists,” Banerjee said at a railways programme in Midnapore town.
“Anybody can believe in anything. I believe in Gandhian philosophy of peace. Not all Marxists are bad. There are Marxists and Naxals in our party too. But we want peace and not violence. If we criticise Maoists for holding guns, we should also criticise CPM. Their (CPM) cadres are also holding guns,” she added.
Banerjee flagged off two trains — Midnapore-Jhargram Jangalmahal Express and Jhargram-Purulia Birsa Munda Express (bi-weekly). She also announced that Jhargram-Midnapore local trains will now stop at Bhadutala Halt and Sardiha Halt in Salboni, where she also announced setting up of a community centre.
“In my recent visit to Jhargram, I had made a promise to the people here and today, I have delivered on that,” she said. She also signed an MOU with IIT-Kharagpur director Damodar Acharya for setting up of a “Centre for Research” for modernisation of the Railways at the premier institute.
“It is a historical step for Indian Railways. A research centre for railways modernisation will be set up at IIT Kharagpur,” Banerjee said.
She also announced that the Railways has decided to set up 375 diagnostic centres across the country, besides 81 hospitals and 44 super-specialty hospitals.
“We will also set up a super-specialty hospital on the lines of AIIMS in Kharagpur,” she added.
She also inaugurated a new computerised reservation centre in Nandigram through remote.

It is a great move to develop the health care for Railway Employee. Kharagpur Railway Main Hospital has been run without proper infrastucture to treat heart patient and ortheopadic patients. No expert doctor of medicine is available.Heart blocks opened by Gany Khan Chowdury in 1984 was closed. To help IIT-Kharagpur, Railway Minister must remove all illegal encroacher from the Railway land adjacent to IIT. Sir J.C.Ghosh the first Director had requested earlier toGovt.of India to release that land to IIT for setting up a Research Centre .The land has been illegally occupied and IIT Kharagpur at present facing grave problem of law & order including drugs are being supplied from those huts and shanties to students. Railway Minister will take action and help IIT to build Research Centre in that Railway Land. Director of IIT knows the fact well.
