A drop was also evident in Part II. Of the 13,044 candidates, 11,328 passed with honours, registering a pass percentage of 86.84, though last year the pass percentage was about 90.88 per cent.
The Calcutta University authorities said they are looking into the reasons for the poor performance of the students.
“There are two honours papers in the Part I examination. We are analysing the marks pattern to know the reasons for the decline in the number of the students qualifying with honours,” said a CU official.
According to some teachers the question papers were difficult this year, while others blamed it on the marking. There are two honours papers in the Part I BCom examination — Accountancy and Indian Financial System. Despite appearing in only two papers, a significant percentage of students failed to qualify.
