MUMBAI, OCTOBER 15
The much-feared shakeout in the Indian aviation industry began to hit home on Wednesday as hundreds of employees of leading private airline Jet Airways took to the streets in protest after they were fired overnight, a move the company said was in the greater interest of regaining viability and security its economic health. While the company said it had “released” 800 flight attendants recruited recently for Jet’s planned expansion programme, it added another 1,100 employees to that list later in the day and said they would include probationary and unconfirmed personnel in other areas including cockpit crew and management personnel.
Aviation industry sources said that this seemed like the beginning of a bloodletting in the sector and other airlines, including Vijay Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines which joined hands with Jet only two days ago to share facilities and cut costs, could follow suit. Kingfisher last month sacked 300 employees, many of them from Air Deccan with which it merged earlier this year. A top Kingfisher official, however, told The Indian Express that it was “very premature for anybody to jump to a conclusion that it would lay off employees just because Jet had done so”.
“It is an unfortunate decision, which all of us in the company regret but it is an attempt to save the company and the jobs of the remaining employees,” Jet Airways Executive Director B Saroj Dutta told a news conference at the airline’s headquarters in Mumbai.
Airlines around the world have been hit hard by rising oil prices and falling traffic, which has been compounded by the global financial crisis. While state-run Air-India posted a loss of over Rs 2,100 crore in 2007-08, Kingfisher’s losses were over Rs 1,000 crore and that of Jet over Rs 800 crore during the same period. Domestic traffic fell by 5.3 per cent in August to 29.2 lakh from 31 lakh in July.
But all that is little consolation to the hundreds of laid-off Jet employees who protested outside its office, many in their golden yellow uniforms who shouted slogans demanding their jobs back. “We’ve done nothing wrong,” said Mitesh Bhatt, who joined Jet in January and was about to complete his probation.
Similar sentiments were expressed by his colleagues who sounded helpless at the loss. “I joined Jet in April this year and did not give my first year BA exams as the joining date was earlier. They have played with our future as no airline will now take us,” said Vishav Preet from Amritsar.
The crisis took a political turn as the laid off employees marched to the office of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and sought the intervention of its chief Raj Thackeray. He did not disappoint them and threatened that no Jet flight would be allowed to operate if the employees were not reinstated.
“A delegation had come to meet us. We heard them and think that they should not have been laid off without any warning, explanation or compensation. We will be meeting the company officials tomorrow and the next course of action will be decided,” said MNS spokesman Nitin Sardesai.
Officials of the Shiv Sena’s labour wing, the Bhartiya Kamgar Sena, also held talks with the Jet Airways management through the day. “Of the 1,000 odd employees laid off by Jet airways, there were 578 from Mumbai. They were on probation and not permanent employees. Though they are not registered with our union, we have taken up their matter with the management. The management has given us in writing that these employees will be taken back on priority once they get more flights. We will, however, keep a vigil and have asked the management not to do the same with permanent employees,” said Vinayak Raut, Bharatiya Kamgar Sena secretary. The Left trade union CITU slammed the Jet move as “illegal and atrocious” and sought the government’s intervention. It demanded grounding of all flights.

Labour law: I haven't seen any of these political parties discussing the issue of of IT professionals who work of long hours and get laid off with no compliance to labour laws.
There is too much excess in the management salary packages which should be reduced for sure for not managing effectively. Also their daily entertainments and free trips and namesake business meetings should be stopped. Only video conferencing. No need for executives to roam around the world doing nothing but to grab from the salaries of hardworking ordinary staff. Basic salary staffs 1900(jet) and 3000?( K.Fisher ) and even AI(15000?) should somehow be accomodated. Vijay
It is very shameful /harmful to our Country that such a mojority of employee are terminated by a such reputated and big organization/ company within a few hours and playing with the people like this is very unjustice. It is my request that a suitable immedaite action should be action against the Jet Airways shold be taken, so that in future no such harms will take place.
Our planner lack strong and future planning else we wouldn't be at the receiving end of others misdeeds (exceeding credit limit). The banks in developed world lavishly spoil its citizens with credit facility. The credit facility funds the citizens house, furniture, cars, holidays, etc. The repayment is effected when there is job loss due to gap in demand and production. We can save our self from the slump in market by being in the driver seat to development. To be in driver seat we have to create products by assessing the need of customer in years to come. The production of new or modified product will create jobs and we should have futuristic thoughts to create jobs in other countries too and not just in India. The day we decide planning and not reservation or chai pani is key to development then no one can stop India.
As mos of us know that the market crashed due to overstretched credit facility in western world. This excess credit facility doomed the financial institutions and industries. I understand India being a party to the global economy cannot overlook the market trend. However, If we see 60 years of our industrial revolution, we will find there is lack focus of our economic policy (I am not big economist but all the information inmedia point to our ill planning). We are second economy, a subordinate to western economy, we are not the primary force to drive the world economy. Take an instance of primary economy, US thoughtfully brings new products, computer, car, chips etc. in to the world and Indian industry work to support the based. We have to drive to be worlds primary economy else for ever we will be at receiving end of slump in western market. To be the primary economy we can initiate a mega education project, where AI and other robust hardware plays a major role in economy.
well, inefficient and very talkative people, people who give suggestions, but themselves are not target and result oriented will be removed. Also people who have been recruited based on SC/ ST but are not good will be taken care off.
Sorry ,but this is simply not on. This is the market we are talking about not the corner ration shop. When an employee joins a private company he should know where he is getting into. And when persons who are not well educated like flight pursers and hostesses etc join they cannot expect IIM status even if they wear smart clothes and plastic smiles. It is time all grew up.
there are more than 50 directors and 200 general managers in merged air india-indian airlines. in each department there are parallel directors posted both at bombay and delhi WHY?--THIS IS A HUGE WASTAGE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY.
