1 hurt as plaster peels off roof

Chandigarh, February 16 A Student sustained injuries when plaster fell off of a classroom roof at Government High School, Maloya. The UT Engineering wing has declared the building unsafe and that it will be demolished.

The incident occurred on Saturday morning during a mathematics lesson. A portion of the plaster fell from the roof injuring Gurjit Kaur, a student of Class VII. Gurjit was rushed to a doctor. She she received stitches on her hand.

“There were no visible cracks on the roof. I was writing in my notebook when a part of it fell on me,” said Gurjit.

As the news spread, a large number of Maloya residents gathered in the school.

The part of of the school where the incident occurred was constructed in the 1950s. Classes for the primary section and Class VII are being held in this particular wing of the school. All the rooms in the building have been locked.

Principal Baljinder Singh said till the new building is constructed, they will ask the Education Department for permission to run the school in two shifts. According to the plan, students from Class VI onwards will come to school in the morning and the rest will attend school in the afternoon.
