New Delhi, October 20 With the opening of Primus Ortho & Spine Hospital at Chanakyapuri, the healthcare sector in the city is all set to get a major boost. The hospital, which boasts of world-class facilitdiseases, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday morning.

The hospital has taken care to ensure that it doesn't come across as an institution meant only for wealthy diplomats. Ten per cent of the beds are allotted for those who cannot afford treatment.

“I have no doubt that Primus Ortho & Spine Hospital will become one of the premier hospitals in Delhi,” Dikshit said. She commended the management for its plan to provide free treatment for the poor.

Minister of Health Yoganand Shastri also commended the hospital for becoming a super-speciality institute to provide for the city's health needs.

He also said such facilities will help increase medical tourism in the Capital. “Medical tourism is increasingly providing financial benefits for the nation,” he said, urging the hospital management to provide more services which would benefit the underprivileged sections of society.

The hospital is equipped to provide expertise in orthopaedics, spine and sports medicine.

Keeping the 2010 Commonwealth Games in mind, the hospital's expertise in sports medicine will be beneficial, an official said. The hospital has the largest number of specialised beds in India with ultra modern ICU and critical care department, officials said.

The team of specialist surgeons, anaesthetists and medical staff will work under the guidance of reputed joint replacement surgeon Prof Surya Bhan. Bhan was earlier the head of orthopaedics at AIIMS.

One of the main objectives of the hospital will be to promote preventive healthcare, it was said today.
