Chandigarh, February 24 The UT Administration has decided to construct cooking sheds in government schools. UT Home and Education Secretary Krishna Mohan today said that Architecture Department is designing the layout of cooking sheds proposed in 10 government schools of the city. Till the completion of construction work of the sheds, one room in each school would be spared for cooking purposes, said Mohan. He revealed that NGOs and women groups would also be involved in cooking food.

The Education Secretary also reviewed the inquiry report of the presence of worms in cooked meal at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27. Mohan also presided over a meeting that discussed to devise safeguards in preparing the meals.

“Nine supervisors have been engaged to transport cooked food efficiently. From now onwards, all schools will depute staff members to take the delivery of meals and they will be responsible for hygiene and quality of food,” he added. Meals would be stored in clean, ventilated and adequately lit places in schools and hands would be covered with good quality gloves while distributing meals, he said.

The Home Secretary stated that all school heads would seek feedback regarding quality and quantity of food from parents, students, staff members, and submit a report to the DEO on daily basis. DEO would also conduct a fortnightly review with the schools heads.

Mohan disclosed that maids have already been engaged to serve cooked meals in school and clean the utensils of children. Mechanised transportation has also been introduced to transport cooked meals, he further added. A flying squad consisting of DEO, deputy DEO, ADO, and a representative of the Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan, would conduct random checks at cooking institutes and in schools.

The Home Secretary further added that rotation of the food menu has been introduced and students are provided with jaggery and groundnuts in a packet of 100 gm per child.
