Chandigarh, May 16 The Education department has decided to give 10 grace marks to students who could not manage to clear the Social Studies paper in this year’s Class VIII UT Board exams. Only five grace marks were to be awarded earlier.

There is also an option of giving the students an assignment for the summer break. The marks awarded on the basis of this asignment will be added to the exam score.

Said Director Public Instructions (Schools) S K Setia, “Considering the number of students failing in the subject, we had decided to give five grace marks. But it was not much of a relief so we have decided to increase it to 10. It is final but we yet have to decide on the grace marks as we have even planned an assignment.”

The decision is significant as it will help a number of students clear their compartments.

Those who are failing in two subjects, including Social Studies, will be promoted if they manage to clear the Social Studies exam with the help of grace marks.

The department further plans to make required changes in the Board. At present, the UT Education Board offers no rechecking or reappear provision.

All that the students can do in case they are not satisfied with their result is that they can get their marks recounted.

Though this year the department only plans to pass the students who are failing in the Social Studies paper, it is reportedly working on the modalities of making the Class VIII Board more transparent.
