Kolkata Ten policemen and five villagers were injured in a clash that broke out early this morning at Harishchandrapur in Malda district.

The policemen were injured when a mob pelted stones at them. Five villagers were also injured as the police opened fire on the mob, Superintendent of Police, Malda, Bhuban Chandra Mondal said.

Mondal said that the villagers at Kamlabari, Chaghari and Talgachi have been engaged in a tussle for a few months over cultivation of ‘makhna’, a plant. To stop the ongoing clashes over makhna production, Bhutia arrested seven persons early today.

Following this, more than 200 villagers attacked police vehicles.
