“There was a case of assault against the students,” said Neeraj Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police, Howrah.
Singh said that one student had surrendered on Monday followed by 11 today but was not sure of the number of students against whom the Fir was lodged.
Later in the day, students demonstrated in front of the Metro Channel in Kolkata demanding restoration of normalcy at the university, where campus clashes becoming a regular feature.
The students alleged that authorities were trying to create a rift among the students, which is tarnishing the image of the university. Independent Consolidation supporters from Jadavpur University and Presidency College also joined the protest.
The students are keen to meet Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the Chancellor of the university, to voice their concerns.
“We had earlier demanded that there should be no political students’ body in the university. But the authorities are bent on creating factions,” said Shyamasish Das, the spokesperson of BESU students’ union.
The students are demanding an explanation as to why the boarders of Wolfenden Hostel involved in the brawls have not been brought to book. The students also demanded an explanation on the midnight evacuation drive at the hostel that left many students at the mercy of outsiders.
