12 die as train hit tractor trolley

Lucknow Twelve people were killed and 35 injured following a tractor trolley was hit by a passenger train at an unmanned railway crossing near Unchahar in Rae Bareli district today. The trolley was overloaded with pilgrims.

According to police, nine died on the spot while three succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Of the 35 injured, five are said to be critical. Rae Bareli SP Tarun Gaba confirmed the death toll.

Sources said trolley was crammed with around 46 people when it was hit by Kanpur-Rae Bareli passenger train. The barrier had been out of order for over 24 hours, they added.

The pilgrims were on their way to Allahabad to join the annual Magh Mela. While 11 of the dead belonged to Shaganj Bijauli area of Barabanki district, one victim was a native of Bihar’s Rohtas district. The rail traffic on the Allahabad-Lucknow was affected for hours after the accident.
