The total fee of all graduate-level computer and management courses is about Rs 15,000 per annum. But these colleges are charging each student Rs 5,000-15,000 extra.
The students who are being charged extra belong to management, business studies and computer applications, a member of the LU registrar’s office told The Indian Express on Saturday. “Most complainants are pursuing courses like Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA), Bachelor in Management Sciences, BBA in International Business, BSc Computer Science,” an official added.
The overcharging is done in the name of newly coined categories like ‘computer-fee’, ‘computer maintenance fee’, an official said. But no college is authorised to charge anything other than tuition-fee.
Though officials refused to name the colleges, university spokesperson Dr Manoj Dixit confirmed receiving complaints from students against “a dozen colleges” last week. Sixty government and private-run colleges are affiliated to the university.
“We have taken note of the complaints,” said LU pro vice-chancellor Prof Radhey Shyam Yadav. Initially, a warning will be issued to the colleges. If they persist in overcharging, the university may consider de-affiliating them.
Last month, Rakesh Dhar Tripathi, Minister for Higher Education, had directed all vice-chancellors of state universities to take action against colleges charging excess fee at a vice-chancellors’ conclave.
