Kolkata, February 8 The youngest member of the ill-fated Sahu family, Dipika (12), succumbed to her injuries at Howrah District Hospital’s surgical ward for women on Friday.

Doctors said the condition of her father, Ram Bahadur, is still critical. He was admitted to the male surgical ward with 90 per cent burn injuries on Thursday.

Superintendent of Police Niraj Kumar Singh said experts from the state forensic laboratory visited the spot today and collected samples.

“We hope they will submit a report within a couple of days. Once we get it we will be in a better position to tell you the cause and nature of the fire. But so far it seems the fire broke out because LPG gas was pumped into the room,” he said.

Experts examined a cylinder and tube that were seized from the site yesterday.

“The cylinder was new. We are trying to identify the area where it was bought,” said a police officer.

The landlord, Kashinath Jaiswal, and his associate Amarnath Prasad, who were arrested yesterday, were produced in a Howrah court today and were remanded in police custody for nine days, the SP said.

Jaiswal and Prasad were booked on charges of attempt to murder, setting fire and causing damage to one’s property, said the police.

The police also found out today that about a week ago, Jaiswal had had a heated argument with Ram Bahadur and his family members. While other tenants had agreed to vacate their huts at the earliest, Ram Bahadur’s family members had refused.

They also reportedly told Jaiswal that if he tried to grab the land forcefully, they would go to the police.

Jaiswal bought the land about five years ago and he had been asking the tenants to vacate the premises, as he wanted to hand it over to a promoter.
