Faizabad, March 6 A Faizabad court has awarded life sentence to 13 persons belonging to four different families in the 1999 Sarju Yadav murder case, besides imposing a fine of Rs 8,000 on each of them.

The additional district judge RK Gautam convicted them on the basis of statements given by the witnesses and medical reports of the deceased.

On April 29, 1999, the accused beat Yadav, his wife Gangawati and brother Nankan with sticks and sharp-edged weapons while they were working in their fields in the Cantonment police station area.

The family was involved in a land dispute case.

After the assailants shot Yadav dead, they left the spot thinking that his wife and brother were also dead.

A day after the incident, Gangawati and Nankan filed an FIR against the accused.

The court today awarded the life sentence to Harishchand and his brothers — Premchand, Moolchand, Ramchand and Gopichand. Phulchand, Manjeet, Buddhu, Surjeet, Dhyanu, Juggilaal, Ramtirath and Hariram, who have also been convicted in the case, said the government counsel Ishwar Chandra Tiwari.
