14 PAU scientists gets national award in Delhi

Ludhiana Fourteen scientists of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) received the national award for their contribution in breeding improved varieties and production technology of basmati rice. The ceremony was held at a function in New Delhi on Monday.

Those present to receive the award included: Dr G S Sidhu, Dr S S Malhi, Dr G S Mangat, Dr M R Gagneja, Dr Jaswant Singh, Dr B S Boparai and Dr P S Gill. Those who were given the awards in absentia included: Dr T S Bharaj, Dr S S Gill, Dr H S Muker, Dr G Singh, Dr G L Raina, Dr Dharampal Singh and Dr M S Pandher.

The award, which is given by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 25,000 for each scientist. State Agriculture Minister Kanti Lal Bhuria congratulated the awardees.

Dr Manjit Singh Kang, PAU vice-chancellor, has congratulated the scientists for bringing laurels to the university.

He said that bio-technology will give an impetus to efforts being made towards national food security through gearing up rice improvement programmes.
