Kolkata, May 11 Lighting and thundershowers lashed Kolkata and its adjoining districts late on Saturday evening.

In Akaipur, Bairampur, Dighari and Ganganadapur of Bongaon block, 500 hutments were destroyed leaving about 150 people homeless and injuring around 30. One person received serious injuries after his hutment collapsed on him. He has been admitted to Bongaon Hospital.

Rains also affected people in the Bagda block where about 100 hutments collapsed. Vegetable fields and banana plantations were also damaged.

With the district administration busy preparing for the panchayat polls, relief materials did not reach the affected families till Sunday late evening.

“Officials concerned have visited the affected regions. We are arranging for relief materials like tarpaulin and food,” said Bongaon SDO Subhendu Ghosh.

It rained in Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah and several places in North and South 24 Parganas. The areas witnessed winds blowing at a speed of 50 to 55 km, uprooting tress and electric posts.

The Met Department has predicted a partly cloudy sky with thundershowers in the evening for Monday. The maximum temperature for Sunday remained around 37 degrees Celsius.
