Kolkata As many as 18 monkeys were found dead in a swimming pool of an army camp in Bengdubi, 15 kms from Siliguri, on Tuesday. Forest department officials said this is a first-of-its-kind case in North Bengal.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem, the results of which are awaited. “It is being investigated if the monkeys died of natural causes or whether they were poisoned,” said a senior forest official, adding that the pool was also being tested to examine if it contained poisonous water. Atanu Raha, principal chief conservator of Forests, said they sent a team of officials and doctors to the spot, after learning of the incident. The case is being investigated, said Raha.
