At an estimated cost of nearly Rs 10 crore, as many as 180 cameras will be installed at various locations in the city.
“We will start installing the cameras by March 31. The project will be completed in six months. The Centre will contribute around 70 per cent of the total cost and the remaining share will be borne by the state,” said Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty.
The cameras will be connected with the central server of the Kolkata police through fibre optic cables. A special software installed in the server will automatically analyse the video feeds of cameras.
“We will upload criminal data in the software so that it can analyse the feeds and generate alerts. The cameras will monitor instances of traffic violation and intrusion. They will also capture the faces of offenders,” said Debashis Roy, Additional Commissioner of Police (Armed police) and project in-charge.
Roy added that the tendering process for the project has been initiated and it will be completed in a couple of weeks.
A senior police official, meanwhile added, that while discussions on the project have been on for the past two years, lack of adequate funds had held back its implementation.
