Shimla, January 7 Congress candidate Prakash Chand Karad, son of Padma Ram, a former cook at 10 Janpath, and who lost the Arki Assembly seat to BJP's Govind Ram, is among the 187 candidates who lost their security deposits in the recent Assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh.

Karad had polled 7,569 votes, while Congress rebel and former deputy speaker Dharampal, who was denied a ticket to accommodate Karad, secured 14,481 votes. A total of 46,315 valid votes were polled, while BJP's Govind Ram polled more than 21,000 votes.

Tilak Raj of the Congress is also among the prominent losers who lost their deposits. He was defeated by former BJP minister J.P. Nadda in Bilaspur by 11,181 votes.

Malvika Pathania of the BJP, who lost to her party rebel and former MLA Rakesh Pathania, who was a winner by 4,165 votes, is another loser.

There were a total of 336 candidates in the fray for the December 19 and November 14 (three tribal Assembly seats) elections.

Of the total 25 women fielded by the parties, only five have won the election. Fourteen of them lost their security deposits.

State's Chief Electoral Officer Manisha Nanda, who released the details about candidates losing their deposits today, said the contesting candidates have to secure more than one-sixth per cent of the valid votes polled in the election. Those having got less than the minimum prescribed votes lose their security deposits.

Most of the candidates losing the security were mainly from the Bahujan Samaj Party and also independents. Some of the BSP candidates such as Dharamvir Dhami (Kullu), Karan Singh (Banjar) and Chaudhry Mahant Ram (Balh) had polled more than 15,000 votes.

According to Nanda, of nine candidates contesting from Arki constituency, seven have forfeited their security. Others include six in Thural and Baijnath (Kangra) and five in Shimla, Kasumpti, Sulah, Dharampur and Mandi. Four each lost their deposits in Shaili, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Naduanta, Chintpurni, Nurpur, Palampur, Kangra, Banjar, Gopalpur and Drang.
