19 dead in bus-lorry collision

Kolkata In Uluberia 16 hurt, initial probe indicates lorry driver at fault

As many as 19 people died while sixteen others were injured when a Gadiara-bound bus collided with a lorry near Mohishrekha Bridge in Uluberia on Sunday evening.

H Kusumakar, SP, Howrah said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver of the lorry was at fault.

“The lorry was coming from the opposite direction (on a one-way lane) when it hit the bus. Nineteen people have died in the accident,” he said. Most of those who died or were hurt were travelling atop the bus. Upon impact, they fell down and sustained injuries, said police.

The driver of the lorry is among the injured and is admitted to the hospital.

He is said to be in a critical condition. Interestingly, while the police maintain a lorry was involved in the collision, eyewitnesses say the bus collided with an oil tanker.

“It was quite dark when the accident occurred. We saw the speeding bus collide with the tanker coming from the opposite direction,” said an eyewitness.

“The tanker had crossed the divider and was travelling in the wrong direction,” he added.

3 die as truck rams car near Fort William

Three persons died while two others sustained injuries following a truck-car collision on the on the Red Road near Fort William on Saturday night. Two of the deceased have been identified as Amit Das and Sunil Hela. The car driver reportedly switched lanes and caught the trucker unawares, following which the collision took place. Two of the car occupants died on the spot while one succumbed to his injuries later at the SSKM Hospital. As soon as the Maidan police station learnt of the accident, firemen were pressed into action to extract the bodies from the car.
