The case dates back to September 24, 1985, when according to the police, a mob of 15-20 men gathered at a chowk near Pydhonie at midnight and started pelting stones and hurling soda bottles at the window panes of nearby buildings. The mob apparently had fled just before the police reached the spot. Property worth Rs 25,000 was reportedly damaged and an old lady living in a nearby hutment was injured seriously in the incident.
Days after the riot, a group of eight men were picked up and charged for rioting and attempt to murder on the basis of the complaint registered by Amina Shaikh, the woman who was injured in the riot. According to the police, after a few months, all the accused were released on bail, but soon after the bail they had gone missing. Although the police filed a complaint and arrested eight persons, the motive behind the rioting was not established.
It was only in December 2008 that a non-bailable warrant was issued against one of the prime accused Ali. However, when the case came up for hearing, the prosecution was unable to bring any witness and the complainant. Even the case paper was lost, said the Pydhonie police. The cases are still pending against other accused in the case.
