Pune The traffic branch of Pune police on Thursday came out with two major decisions to streamline traffic and ensure security. It has imposed a circular one-way route around the Pune police commissionerate and also decided to ban parking of vehicles on both sides of the road from Hotel Taj to the University of Pune, mostly used by the convoys of VVIPs.

Passing the order on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil cited reducing traffic jams and securing the VVIP routes as reasons for the decision. As per the order, parking of vehicles will not be allowed on both sides of the route from University of Pune to Indian Meteorological Department and from Sancheti Hospital to Engineering College junction and from Regional Transport Office to Jehangir Hospital, going on to Hotel Taj Blue Diamond.

The traffic control branch has also imposed one-way traffic on the stretch from Dorabjee’s to Blue Nile Hotel and from Kirad junction to Nehru Memorial Hall — a circular stretch that goes around the Pune police commissionerate. According to the police, this circular one-way traffic will avoid traffic jams and give additional security to the commissionerate.

Meanwhile, the traffic control branch has also banned parking on either sides of the road between the state government press and library, located near the police commissionerate.

According to another order, movement of trucks carrying cement from Maldhakka junction, off Pune Railway station, to city has been restricted between 9 am to 11.30 am and 4.30 pm to 8 pm.

Request to schools
To keep the roads free for traffic, the Pune police have requested city schools to make parking arrangements on the school premises.
“We have asked our traffic police branches across the city to discuss the parking issue with school authorities. It has been noticed that vehicles that pick up and drop students are parked outside the school premises obstructing flow of vehicles,” said Inspector Vijaykumar Palsule of traffic control branch.

Parking trouble in Pune by vijay on 06 Feb 2009

Pune police officers should not think of VVIPS only.To take care of them at the regular inconvenience of thousands of people everyday is unfair. As it is, everywhere in Pune parking is chargeable, not free.Pune badly needs a good leadership to make the public transport efficent. That alone can solve the problems.Use of private vehicles is made out of compulsion and not for luxury by the majority of vehicle owners. Will someone listen?
