Kanpur Two children died and seven others, among them six children, injured when their school van collided head-on with a truck near the Nagra village under Sarsaul police station on Tuesday morning. The driver of the school van, who was also injured, was driving the vehicle on the wrong side of the highway.

The injured have been admitted to the Madhuraj Nursing Home.

The two deceased were identified as Mohit Uttam (5) and Yash (5). The six other children who were injured are — Mohit (9), Saurabh (9), Keenu (10), Udai Singh (5), Sunil (6) and Tanmay (7). All are students of Golden Bell Public School, Sarsaul. Manish (20), the van driver, too has been admitted in the nursing home.

While condition of Saurabh and Mohit is said to be critical, the remaining five are out of danger.

Following the mishap, the family members of school children and other locals blocked the traffic movement of Kanpur-Allahabad route for more than three hours. Though the truck (UP32 CN 8932) has been recovered by Sarsaul police, the driver, who is yet to be identified, managed to escape.

After picking up school children from various areas in the Fatehpur district, the driver of the school van moved the vehicle on the wrong side of the highway to reach the school early. The driver of the truck moving towards Fatehpur could not control the vehicle.

After the accident, five-year-old Mohit Uttam died on the spot. Later, Yash expired due to excessive bleeding and multiple injuries in the chest, head and abdomen.

“The condition of Mohit and Saurabh is critical as they had skull fracture and there was a swelling in their brain,” said Dr Vikas Shukla, a neurosurgeon at the nursing home.

The van driver is being treated for fracture in the leg.

School principal Sapna Mishra said, “If found guilty, we will take action against the van driver.” she added.

Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Rural Area) Lal Bahadur said, “We have the truck number and will soon arrest the absconding driver.” He said a case will be registered against the van driver if he is prima facie found guilty.
