The incident came to light on Sunday night when the authorities found Sonbeer, a member of the infamous Nambia gang of Chambal, and Rama Nand, accused in a murder case, missing during the counting. It was unclear how they escaped.
“The incident happened when the undertrials were out of their cells to have food,” said R N Sharma, Jail Superintendent of Etawah prison.
Sharma said they managed to scale the boundary wall, which was under construction or vaulted over with the help of a bamboo.
But Superintendent of Police (Etawah) S R S Aditya said they have not “found any evidence which hints that the escape happened the way the jail staff claim” and it is suspected that they had help from the jail staff.
The five jail wardens against whom an FIR has been filed are Shashi, Radhey Shyam, Satish, Suresh Chandra and Mohammad Rauf. All the exit points of the district have been sealed and every vehicle leaving the area is being checked. The police also blamed the jail authorities for providing the information late, which led to a delay in initiating the search operation. “The matter came to light around 7 pm on Sunday but the jail staff informed us at 10 pm,” said a senior police officer. Sonbeer was arrested on October 10, 2006, during a police operation in which his associate was killed. Six cases of kidnapping and murder are pending against him. Rama Nand was arrested in 2007 and two cases under Arms Act are pending against him.
