The SGPC staff were in the village to take possession of some land belonging to the village gurdwara when farmers opposed to the move arrived at the spot and a clash ensued. A farmer Kashmir Singh was shot dead on the spot, while another, Balwinder Singh, died of gunshot injuries at the hospital. The injured are admitted in Guru Nanak Super Specialty Hospital in Amritsar. No SGPC member was injured.
According to the police, after a local court ruled in the SGPC’s favour, its staff had taken certain revenue officials with them to take possession of a part of a 700-acre plot allegedly encroached upon by some farmers.
The farmers had been opposing the move saying they had been tilling the land for many years and paying rent to the gurdwara management.
Farmers alleged that the SGPC members fired at them, though SGPC Secretary Dalmegh Singh, who reached the spot later, said the SGPC members had not violated any law and they were taking possession of the land as farmers were paying no rent for it and using it illegally. He said he was not aware who fired at the farmers.
Batala SSP D P Singh said a case has been registered. “We had deployed some force but SGPC staff refused to take the help of the police saying that they were the rightful owners of the land and there would not be any resistance. After the firing, senior officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control,” said the SSP, adding that the police were trying to find out who opened fire.
