Chandigarh, March 13 The Crime Branch of Chandigarh police arrested a mother-son duo for the death of Nirmal Singh, a resident of Hallo Majra.

The relatives of the victim had earlier alleged that Nirmal had died in police custody. A number of police officers including the SHO of Sector 31 police station were also suspended and an inquiry was initiated on January 4.

During the probe, it was found that a violent brawl had taken place between two families on January 2 over drainage system in Hallo Majra.

Nirmal was allegedly beaten up by Salinder Kaur and her son, who attacked him with bricks and injured him badly, said Inspector Prem Chand of Crime Branch.

After the brawl, Kaur was taken to the hospital, while Nirmal and others were taken to the police station in Sector 31, from where he managed to escape.

The police then chased Nirmal and managed to nab him. As he was injured, they rushed him to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later. Relatives alleged that Nirmal died as police officers tortured him during interrogation.

A case of murder was then registered and an inquiry initiated. The role of the suspended police officers is still doubtful and they have not been given a clean chit as the results of the narco tests are still awaited, sources in the Crime Branch said.
