Mumbai The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Monday arrested two youth for allegedly murdering an office boy at a lottery centre in Malad in December. According to the police, the duo looted the lottery centre after the murder . They had lost a lot of money gambling there and owed its owner a substantial amount of money, said the police.

The arrested accused have been identified as Rajesh Kumar Chaubey (24) and Satish Suresh Pawar (25)and they are the residents of Pratap Nagar in Kurar village. Pawar is a jewellery designer and Chaubey had worked for a computer hardware shop in Vashi till last October 2008. He has been unemployed since last October. Neither of them has a prior criminal record, said the police.

“On December (26), Ajeet Sharma, the owner of Sai Lottery Centre outside Malad (East) railway station left the shop at 10:35 pm. The manager Raju Manick left at 11:15 pm to have dinner. While returned an hour later, Manick found the body of office boy Sanjay Turiya with head injuries and throat slit. A case was registered at Dindoshi police station. We started conducting parallel enquiries. The two accused were called for questioning to Crime Branch Unit 12 this afternoon. During the interrogation, they down and confessed to have committed the crime,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

Subsequent interrogations revealed that Chaubey was into online gambling and lost around Rs 11,000 at the Malad centre. Though he managed to pay back Rs.6,000, the owner and manager of the shop were hounding him to pay the remaining dues. Pawar also owed them money.

“Together, the duo owed them around Rs.35,000. They managed to know that the owner took cash from the shop only on three days of the week and on other days a large amount of money was kept in the shop itself. One week prior to the offence, they kept on watching the movements of the owner and manager. On the day of the offence, they entered the shop and found the office boy sweeping the floors. Suddenly, Pawar hit him on the head with a pipe, while Chaubey slit his throat. They took a key out of his pocket and opened the drawer in which the money was kept. But, they found only Rs 15,500 which they took and fled,” said Maria.
