Mumbai The Kandivli police busted a fake modelling agency, which duped many aspiring models of thousands of rupees. On January 3 the police received a complaint from one Seema Mundegar who claimed that an agency called Page 3 operating out of Mathuradas Road in Kandivli had taken Rs 3 lakh from her daughter after promising her a career in modelling.

She named one Bhagawan Navagane as the accused in the case. Eight more people approached the police with the same complaint. The agency had duped people of Rs 10,03,000. The Kandivli police initially had trouble locating Navagane, however, a piece of a pay slip from a bank led the police to him. Navagane was arrested on January 16. He revealed that one Manish Thakkar alias Gurubhai was the mastermind behind the operation. Thakkar was arrested on Tuesday and sent to jail. All nine complainants have received their money from the accused. Senior police inspector S Jaiswal of Kandivli police station said, “When we checked the lease of the office to reach the accused we found that it had no details of him. During investigation we realised that Navagane had made a police complaint about a theft in the office and had given a Mira Road address. However this turned out to be fake and just when we thought we had run out of options we noticed a piece of paper in a dustbin in the office of Page 3. It was a pay slip of a bank. After we approached the bank we finally found him in Prabhadevi. He told us that Thakkar was the mastermind behind the operation. After Thakkar’s arrest we discovered that he has similar cases against him in Kurar and Oshiwara.” Jaiswal added, “Navagane would place ads in the newspaper mentioning that his company would help aspiring models. As young boys and girls approached him he would take anywhere between Rs 50,000 to one lakh and shoot a portfolio. He would then call them in a few days telling them that a company had selected them and take them to a beach or a bungalow for a photo shoot after taking more money. He would pay them maybe Rs 5000 from that money and take a cut from it as commission.”
