According to the police, the thieves dropped an additional Rs 2.35 lakh outside the ATM while being chased by the guards. The police suspect an inside hand involved in the theft.
The theft took place at an HDFC Bank ATM beside Vishal Hall outside Andheri (East) railway station, at about 1.30 am, said the police.
“Two men carrying a bag entered the ATM, while guard Neeraj Singh was on duty. One of them started filling up some pay slips, while the other went to the ATM machine. They were inside the ATM gallery for more than ten minutes, while another customer was waiting outside. The waiting customer asked the guard to check how long the men inside would take. When the guard looked inside, he sensed something wrong and raised an alarm. He called for the watchman of the building next door,” said Police Sub-Inspector Anand Bhoir of the Andheri police station.
When Singh raised an alarm, the two thieves ran out of the ATM gallery pushing him aside. However, while being chased, one of the thieves tripped on the road and dropped notes amounting to Rs 2.35 lakh, before getting onto a running bus.
“The two thieves made away with Rs 7.12 lakh and we have registered a case of theft against them. We believe that an insider is involved as the thieves entered a specific 8 digit code to remove cash from the ATM. They also left behind Rs 60,000 in the machine so that a centralised system in the bank would not be alerted that the ATM machine was out of cash. We will question people working for the company that is responsible for maintenance and refilling of the ATM,” said Bhoir. The police are also preparing sketches of the two thieves based on descriptions provided by Singh.
