2 pedestrians die in road accident

Kolkata, March 17 In two seperate road accidents, two pedestrians died and several were injured in South 24 Parganas and Salt Lake on Tuesday. Two pedestrians were killed and three others were injured after being knocked down by a private bus  at Santoshpur, South 24 Parganas, on Tuesday morning. The pedestrians, who died on the spot, are yet to be identified. Others have been admitted to the Maheshtolla Hospital.

According to police, the incident occurred at 11 am when a bus (route number 241A) was travelling at a high speed from Santoshpur to Esplanade. The bus lost control and landed on the footpath, knocking down several persons. Following which, angry locals ransacked the bus and tried to set it afire. A clash ensued when the police arrived. Locals hurled bricks and stones at the policemen. But no casualty was injured. The police had to use lathicharge to control the situation.

“The driver and conductors of the bus fled the spot. We have filed a case and they will be arrested,” said Praveen Kumar, Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas.

In a another accident, eight persons were critically injured after a Tata 407 collided with a lorry near the Wipro crossing Salt Lake’s Sector 5. The incident took place around 5.30 am on Monday. The injured were travelling in the Tata carrier, which was carrying fish to the local market. Locals later brought them to the Salt Lake sub-divisional Hospital.
