Vadodara At least 20 pouches containing gold kept in the custody of Anyonya Cooperative Bank at Dandiya Bazar in Vadodara were found missing during a routine check by bank officials on Saturday.

The news created panic among the customers, even though the bank officials assured that the pouches must have been misplaced and kept in some other location.

According to the chairman of the bank, Dilip Kelkar, the pouches consist of five to 15 grams of gold belonging to individual customers.

“Customers take a loan against the gold they deposit in the bank. The pouches are kept in the lockers,” said Kelkar.

He lodged a complaint in this regard with the Raopura police station in the night.

Kelkar said that every six months, bank officials recount the number of pouches for record.

“But this morning, the pouches were found missing from the lockers. We have assured our customers that the pouches must have been misplaced, but to be on the safer side we are informing the police,” added Kelkar.

He refused to disclose the value of the gold. Sources in the bank said it could amount to around Rs 4 lakh.

Earlier, the bank was served a closure notice by the Reserve Bank of India on September 15, 2008 under the Banking Act after it suffered losses to the tune of Rs 20 crore. The bank is now on a liquidation process.
