Some of the prime demands, according to Priyamvada Saxena, state representative of the Parishad from Pune division, were to increase the allowance of ‘Shikshan Sevaks’ – the newly recruited teachers, issue non-salaried grant to school management, introduce partial pension scheme for teachers, award free-ships to students from backward class among others.
She said the government had not made non-teaching staffs appointment or promotions since the last eight years. “While the government has reduced special pay for teachers, it has completely suspended special pay for supervisors since 2005,” Saxena said, adding, that they demanded reinstatement of the special pay. The Parishad also demanded change in state government's policy of December 24, 2001, wherein schools that were not approved before this date were declared permanently unaided. “Our demand is to delete the term permanent unaided schools, which implies that these schools do not ever stand a chance of becoming aided school,” said Nirmala Shetty, a teacher in Dastur Girls’ School who is supporting the strike.
